UTAS-Guest Wireless Network


The UTAS-Guest Wi-Fi network is a service for short term visitors to any University of Tasmania campus.


Terms and Conditions

The supply of accurate identification details is a legal mandate before any access to the University Internet connection can be granted. Providing false or incomplete details can carry severe criminal and financial penalties.

You MUST have a functional Australian mobile number to complete the registration process.


To use any University network service successfully, you must ensure your device is using DHCP including for the DNS settings. You will need to delete any manually entered DNS entries (such as 8.8.8.8) from your network settings to access the Internet at UTAS.


UTAS-Guest conditions of usage include:

  • UTAS staff and students are NOT permitted to use UTAS-Guest, you must use eduroam.
  • Your usage is monitored and recorded.
  • Some Internet content and web sites will be filtered.
  • There are speed and data quota limits.
  • Your account is typically valid for a month.
  • You must not share your account details with others.
  • The use of VPN technology is not guaranteed to work.
  • You must use the University DNS servers as provided by DHCP.
  • UTAS-Guest is provided as a best-effort service to visitors. There is no guarantee of performance or Wi-Fi stability at any location.
  • The University is not liable for any damages or losses incurred by you whilst using the University network.

How to Connect

To use the UTAS-Guest Wi-Fi service, connect to the “UTAS-Guest” network on a UTAS campus and open a web browser, which should automatically redirect to the registration portal, where you can create your account. Your login details will be sent to you in an SMS once registered. Your username will be your Australian mobile phone number, including the country code of +61.

The details of your device will be recorded and you should be able to simply re-connect to UTAS-Guest as needed during your visit.

You may need to log into the Wi-Fi network each day of an extended visit, but you will only need to register the first time.

If you are a repeat visitor to campus for business or collaboration purposes, your UTAS contacts can request a reactivation or extension of your account expiry date.
